Making hydrogen from blood
Fuel Cells, July 20 2010 (The Hydrogen Journal)
- Sean Elliot, a researcher at Boston University has won a $100,000 grant from the US Research Corporation for Science Advancement (RCSA) to try to make hydrogen from blood.
The RCSA’s grant review panel was led by Nate Lewis of the California Institute of Technology, who has been described as “one of the foremost world experts in solar energy conversion."
The project works with heme, which is a form of iron which is found in blood cells.
Heme proteins in bacteria can move electrons and electricity around the cells.
The researchers have worked out a way to introduce light sensitive artificial pigments into some of the heme proteins.
They think that if they can do that, they might be able to find a way to get the pigments to release hydrogen when exposed to sunlight.
However the researchers still need to get a much better understanding of the way electrons are transferred in cells.
