Shetland Islands hydrogen project
Applications, July  14  2010 (The Hydrogen Journal)

- A project is underway in the Shetland Islands of the North Coast of Scotland to build small hydrogen power units, according to an article in the Shetland News.

The scheme will aim to generate, store and supply hydrogen.

The project involves a company called Pure Energy on the island of Unst; and Lews Castle College in Stornaway. Vincenzo Ortisi, an electronic engineer, will develop the fuel cell.

Pure Energy believes that by recovering the heat from the fuel cell the system can be 92 to 93 per cent efficient. During the summer the heat can be used for cooling.

The hydrogen would be produced from renewable energy.

The project is supported by the North of Scotland "Knowledge Transfer Partnership", which aims to connect universities with companies.
