Minnesota: making hydrogen for fertiliser from wind
Production, June 18 2010 (The Hydrogen Journal)
- A $3.75m test plant is being built in Morris, Minnesota, which will generate hydrogen by electrolysing water using wind power from a 1.65mW turbine, and use the hydrogen to make anhydrous ammonia fertilizer, according to an AP article.
Construction began in June 2010, scheduled to be completed at the end of 2010.
Nitrogen is separated from air using an air separation unit. It is reacted with hydrogen from the electrolyser in a Haber-Bosch chemical process.
Currently the fertilizer costs around $500 a ton when bought on the open market, and it would be difficult for the wind produced fertilizer to compete at that price.
However 2 years ago fertilizer cost $1200 a ton when there was a spike in gas prices. With fertilizer at that price, ammonia from wind could be viable.
