Horizon’s portable electronics fuel cell
Fuel Cells, June  18  2010 (The Hydrogen Journal)

- Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies of Singapore has launched a pocket sized fuel cell called MiniPak designed to be used to power portable electronics, which is powered by hydrogen cartridges.

The unit can be purchased today from Horizonfuelcell.com for $99.

However customers will still need to find a way of filling up their hydrogen cartridges. The company is developing a "HydroFILL" some hydrogen station which will supply hydrogen to the cartridges made by electrolysing water. The company says that the price of a HydroFILL is available on application.

The company claims that this is the first portable fuel cell product on the market.

It can provide 1.5W to 2W of continuous power, via a mini USB port.

It is powered by a metal hydride cartridge, with one cartridge providing as much power as 1000 disposable AA alkaline batteries, or around 12 watt hours of energy, the company says. The cartridge can then be refilled with hydrogen.

It will be available for $99, with prices expected to drop to $29 as production levels increase. Fuel cell cartridges will be sold for a price "similar to disposable alkaline batteries" and once a market develops it should be possible to refill them "for a few cents."

The fuel cell is PEM (Polymer Electrolyte Membrane).
