Wärtsilä fuel cell onboard car carrier
Fuel Cells, June  18  2010 (The Hydrogen Journal)

- Power company Wärtsilä has installed a 20kW SOFC fuel cell to provide auxiliary power onboard a car carrier owned by Wallenius Lines of Sweden.

The vessel sailed from Bremerhaven, Germany, in May with the fuel cell onboard, headed for the US via Sweden and the UK.

It will test how well fuel cells work onboard vessels.

The fuel cell can be directly fuelled by methanol, which is available in all major ports around the world.

The fuel cell was installed by the METHAPU consortium, with members including Wärtsilä, Wallenius Marine, Lloyd’s Register, Det Norske Veritas, and the University of Genoa. The project has Euro 1m funding from the European Union under the European Community Framework Programme (FP6).
