Air Products: $253m to capture carbon from steam methane reformers
Production, June 18 2010 (The Hydrogen Journal)
- Air Products has received a $253m from the US government to work out ways to capture carbon dioxide from steam methane reformers, which make hydrogen from natural gas.
The funding has been received from the United States Department of Energy (DOE) under the Industrial Carbon Capture and Sequestration (ICCS) Program. The funding will be used for final engineering, design, construction and operation of the project through September 2015.
Air Products will design, construct and operator a system to capture carbon dioxide from its two steam methane reformers at the Valero Refinery in Port Arthur, Texas. The reformers generate hydrogen which is used by nearby refineries.
The carbon dioxide will then be used for enhanced oil recovery in nearby oil fields operated by Denbury Resources, being transported by the Denbury Green Pipeline.
The company estimates that approximately one million tons of CO2 annually will be recovered, purified and delivered via the pipeline.
