Residential fuel cell in New Haven, Connecticut
Fuel Cells, June 09 2010 (The Hydrogen Journal)
- A 400 kW fuel cell has been installed in a residential / business building in downtown New Haven, Connecticut, which the developers claim is the first large scale residential fuel cell installation in the world.
The building is a 700,000 square foot size, including a 25 story residential tower with 500 residential units, a 4 story parking garage, and ground floor retail, with plans to add a grocery store, bike shop, day care and office space. The building also has a fitness center, library, pool, green roof, children's playroom and lounge rooms. It is right next to State Street train station.
The fuel cell will generate power for the 500 residential units, common areas and retail spaces. It will also provide thermal energy.
The development marks a success for people who believe that fuel cells should and can be incorporated safely within residential developments. In the neighbouring town of Trumbull, Connecticut (20 miles away), plans to build a 3-4 mW fuel cell in a residential neighbourhood were recently abandoned, following complaints from residents.
