US inventors develop $99,500 solar hydrogen system to clean up water
Production, June 09 2010 (The Hydrogen Journal)
- A group of US investors have developed a device which uses solar energy to clean up contaminated water, by generating hydrogen to power a fuel cell.
The idea is that it could be used in the developing world to help provide drinking water.
The investors are accepting orders for $99,500, and targeting medical clinics, schools and disaster relief agencies. They have already built a working model (see YouTube video).
The unit is mounted on a trailer and can purify 20,000 gallons of water a day, with any excess energy being stored as hydrogen.
The solar power generates electricity, which separates (clean) water into hydrogen and oxygen; the hydrogen powers a fuel cell and the oxygen can be used for medical uses. The fuel cell runs a water purification system, removing any viruses and bacteria.
