Linde builds 2 public transport hydrogen stations in California
Fuel Cells, June 09 2010 (The Hydrogen Journal)
- Linde North America has announced plans to build 2 hydrogen fuelling stations in California, for fuel cell buses operated by the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC transit), which operates buses covering Oakland, Emeryville and Berkeley.
The fuel stations will electrolyse water (with electrolysers supplied by Proton Energy Systems) to make gaseous hydrogen. They will also have liquid hydrogen available if necessary as a backup.
AC Transit also operates a 575 kW solar power station which feeds money into the grid, and electricity credits from this will be used to pay for the electrolyser. So you could say that the hydrogen is produced from solar energy.
The stations will be located at AC Transit's Emeryville and Oakland operating divisions.
"We expect this project to prove that hydrogen fuel cell buses can perform as well or better than diesel fuelled buses, while reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in excess of 40 percent," AC Transit says.
The electrolysers use ionic compression, which reduces electricity demand and needs less maintenance than normal electrolysers. This technology has previously been used by Linde in Europe.
Linde's IC-50 bus fuelling system can fill a bus with 30kg of hydrogen in 6 minutes.
