Mumbai - trial of hydrogen enriched buses
Transportation, Mar  11  2010 (The Hydrogen Journal)

- A trial is planned in Mumbai of 50-70 buses running on natural gas (mainly methane) with 15-20 per cent hydrogen, according to an article on news service Perth Now (Australia).

The fuel blend is called Hythanee and is developed by the US subsidiary of Eden Energy Ltd, which is based in Perth.

Also involved are Mahanagar Gas of Mumbai.

The gas blend is designed to reduce harmful emissions from the buses and increase efficiency.

Eden Energy will install a Hythanee refueling station and infrastructure at a central Mumbai bus depot, fuelling 2 buses initially. Over 4000 buses are operated at the depot, over half already running on natural gas.

The trial will start in the last quarter of 2010 and run for 6 months, with a view to expanding it if it is successful.

The India government has a plan to move to a full hydrogen based economy by 2050, with 20 per cent of all vehicles running on hydrogen by 2020.

The first public Hythanee dispensing station was established in 2009 on the outskirts of Delhi.

Indian Oil Corporation has agreed to fund the development of new technology at the University of Greenland to develop hydrogen from natural gas using carbon nanotubes.

Eden Oil has also completed development of a 6 cylinder, 6 litre bus engine to run on Hythanee, together with Ashok Leyland, India's largest bus manufacturer.
