BP hydrogen plant in Abu Dhabi
Production, Jan  29  2010 (The Hydrogen Journal)

- BP plans to invite bids in the first quarter of 2010 to build a $2bn hydrogen power plant in Abu Dhabi, according to the Wall Street Journal, speaking to the director of Hydrogen Power Abu Dhabi (a joint venture between BP and Abu Dhabi state owned company Masdar).

The final investment decision should be made by the end of 2010.

The plant was originally announced in early 2008 but was held back due to technical discussions, the article says.

The plant will generate hydrogen from reformed natural gas, with the carbon dioxide produced in the reforming process being buried in oil fields.

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company will provide the gas and buy back the carbon dioxide, hoping to make a profit on the use of it in enhanced oil recovery (using the carbon dioxide to push more oil out of the ground).

The hydrogen will be combusted in a 500 mW power plant, with 100 mW of the power generated used in the plant itself. It will capture around 1.7m tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.
