Whistler "close" to finding local hydrogen source
Transportation, Jan 29 2010 (The Hydrogen Journal)
- BC Transit, which operates buses in British Columbia, Canada, says it is "very close" to finding a local supplier for hydrogen, to power 20 hydrogen buses brought in for the Winter Olympics at the ski resort of Whistler, according to news service the Whistler Question.
At the moment, the liquid hydrogen is trucked in from Quebec, 5,200km away, and the fossil fuel burned from this transport offsets any gains from using fuel cell buses.
The plan is to build a hydrogen liquefier in North Vancouver, to be operational mid 2011, operated by a company called Hydrogen Technology and Energy Corporation (HTEC). It is likely to receive funding from the Canadian federal government.
The hydrogen is a by-product of an electrochemical process, from a plant which has been venting hydrogen to the atmosphere for the past 40 years.
The hydrogen bus project is costing CDN $89.5m, including running the buses until March 2014.
