Ballard fuel cells for 5 European buses
Fuel Cells, Jan 13 2010 (The Hydrogen Journal)
- Canadian fuel cell manufacturer Ballard Fuel Cells has announced a sale of 5 fuel cells to be used in European buses.
The units will be shipped in the second quarter of 2010. Two buses will operate in Cologne (Germany) and two in Amsterdam (Netherlands).
The order is from a Dutch company called Advanced Public Transportation Systems BV, a bus manufacturer which is part of the VDL group.
Ballard will supply its 150 kilowatt FCvelocity-HD6 "power module" which incorporates the fuel cell stack and additional components for regulating humidification, hydrogen pressure, hydrogen recirculation, water management, ventilation and controls.
By putting all of this together in a module, it should be easier to integrate into the bus design.
The fuel cells will be installed and integrated by a company called Vossloh-Kiepe.
The bus design they are installed in is called "Phileas", designed for high frequency services on bus lanes equipped with magnetic markers for electronic lane assistance and precision docking (parking), so you end up with something similar to a rail service.
The power modules are also used by BC Transit (British Columbia) and Transport for London.
